Sometime after witnessing Azel's death and even holding him as he died in battle, Fire Emblem Destiny sacrifices her life for her friends, this causes her to enter a state called limbo, during which the aforementioned Azel comes to take her to the land of the dead.
Fire Emblem Destiny:What are you doing here, Azel?!
Azel:I came to get you, as you died to save your friends from Grima...
Fire Emblem Destiny:I died?
Azel:Yes.
Fire Emblem Destiny:Where are we, Azel?
Azel:We're in between life and death, better known as limbo.
Fire Emblem Destiny:Take me away, Azel!
Azel:Time to go, Destiny.
